Oral contraceptives have become extremely popular amongst women as their primary source of birth control. In fact, 16 million females are currently using them and most say it is successful in preventing unwanted pregnancies. But, are the benefits really worth the long term risks? In my opinion, the answer is no. Here are 8 reasons why we should all steer clear of the pill:
So where do we go from here?
Although it may seem like the only option for preventing unwanted pregnancies, that could not be any farther from the truth. There are many different things to try including male/female condoms, diaphragms, and the most natural form: monitoring your cervical mucus. There is a specific method out there that is worth investigating. It's called The Billings Ovulation Method. Studies have proven this type of birth control to be just as effective as the pill when done correctly. Not only that, it allows you to connect with your own body and natural cycle, making the process of understanding your own fertility when you potentially decide to start a family. It also will bring awareness to any kinds of issues that may be going on that will need to be checked including irregularities, abnormal bleeding, changes in discharge, etc...
As you can see, I am extremely passionate about this topic as I believe it is one of the many main reasons women are suffering and facing some pretty serious health issues. How quick are doctors to put all females on the pill starting at a very young age? It's not right and it's certainly not the answer. I believe the more awareness we bring to this topic, the more empowered we will feel to take control of our own health and be our best advocate. Although I am not here to judge and support a women's right to choose what is best for her body, I do think that this issue is something we all should be examining in our lives. There is a better way and it's our job to make sure we do anything and everything to find what the best option is for our lives and our future.
Please feel free to comment on what you think! I think this is a hot topic that deserves more discussion.
To a Cycle of Success,
Daily living causes much stress, which is not easy on the adrenal glands.
The adrenal glands are the triangle-shaped endocrine glands that sit atop the kidneys. They are chiefly responsible for regulating the stress response through the synthesis of corticosteroids and catecholamine, including cortisol and adrenaline.
When the adrenals are tired, the body may experience a number of different symptoms. The most common symptoms caused by tired or worn-out adrenal glands are:

"What is food to one man may be bitter poison to others." -Lucretius, a Roman poet and philosopher.
Food sensitivities are the fundamental ground work of health and nutrition. It's the only true way to create a plan catered to exactly what your body needs to burn fat and prevent degenerative diseases. Here's why I believe everyone should know their sensitivity status:
This type of testing was designed to personalize nutrition at a cellular level. The core technology is a blood test that measures the body's response to challenges from a wide array of substances including: foods, food additives and colorings, molds, environmental chemicals, medicinal foods and herbs.
Why is this so important to you?
Because 70% of your immune system lives in your gut. This is where we are most vulnerable to get attacked. When you have chronic digestive issues it can create gaps in your intestines (AKA "Leaky Gut Syndrome). If pieces of food get into your bloodstream, your body will produce antibodies to attack these "toxins" and get rid of them. This cycle can cause an entire host of problems, some listed on the picture above. For me personally, it contributes to my autoimmune conditions, inflammation and overall sense of well-being. I test for any food sensitivities once a year.
With that being said, I have had so much success in my own life utilizing this technology and am now starting to implement it with my clients. I am now able to test anyone, no matter where you live!
If you are interested in learning more please reach out to me as soon as possible. I am currently running a special on all testing packages from now thru the month of March.
*It is estimated that over 34 million people in the United States suffer from food sensitivities*

To Food for You,
Here is a letter I received recently from one of my clients:
I have struggled with “invisible” health issues for a good portion of my life. I was diagnosed with Primary Raynaud’s during early childhood and suffered from a great deal of environmental stress and bouts of depression. In my early 20s, I started suffering from what my doctor thought were frequent UTIs until I was finally diagnosed with Interstitial Cystitis. As my 20s progressed, I began suffering from generalized anxiety disorder (to include anxiety and panic attacks), weight gain, bloating, constipation, facial hair, cystic acne, oily skin, tension headaches, non-allergic rhinitis, allergy-induced asthma, chronic sinus issues and post nasal drip, chronically dry skin, benign skin growths, rashes, restless leg and most recently reproductive and GI health issues. Through these years, I was seemingly healthy, so when I would go to the doctor and say that something was wrong, I felt as though I was brushed aside and told there was either nothing wrong or that it was just my anxiety. I slowly began turning more towards alternative medicine; seeking balance through acupuncture, exercise, and massage. While these things helped me tremendously, they were not enough; I wanted my life back. I frequently thought, “If this is how I feel at 30, how is 40, 50, 60 going to feel?”. I sought the assistance of a functional medicine practitioner and through him, was diagnosed with a severe Vitamin D deficiency, a MTHFR deficiency, estrogen-dominant hormonal imbalance, endometriosis, and gluten intolerance; most of which, could be contributed to most, if not all, of the ailments I was suffering from, but after months of taking vitamin supplements and only feeling some amazing, but minimal improvements I knew I needed to seek additional help. Through my own personal research, it became abundantly clear to me that I needed to get my gut health in check.
Enter Alicia and Shore Nutrition and Wellness. It was my intuition that brought me to her, versus utilizing the nutritional support provided by my doctor’s office and I cannot express how thankful I am for listening to myself. Alicia is kind, caring, compassionate, understanding, honest, beyond supportive, completely non-judgmental, knowledgeable, and extremely hard-working. It is abundantly clear that she is passionate about her job and helping as many people as possible on their journeys of health and wellness. Her program is easy to follow and does not feel restricting in any way. It’s all about nourishing your body with real, nutrient-dense, delicious food without feeling deprived. With her support and guidance, I have developed the tools I need to ensure that I am not only physically balanced, but emotionally balanced as well. While I have had some set-backs; most recently being diagnosed with GERD, candida-caused monilial esophagitis, hiatal hernia, acute gastritis and further reproductive health issues, Alicia has helped me take all of this is stride. She is supporting me through natural supplementation to eradicate the candida and continued improvement in my gut health. Despite these set-backs, I am extremely happy to report that I have removed harmful toxins and inflammation that were contributing to my weight gain, bloating, and constipation; my skin is not as oily and the cystic acne is clearing; my allergies have greatly improved (I can actually clean my house without having to wear a dust mask or love on my dog without experiencing an asthma attack – this is huge!); the endometrioma on my ovary is stable without the use of birth control pills; and most importantly, my hormones are almost completely balanced! It has been through her love, support, and guidance that I have gotten this far and not been derailed as I have been so many times in the past and while I still have a long way to go, I know I have the tools I need to continue pushing forward on my wellness journey. Words cannot express how thankful I am to Alicia for that, along with her continued support moving forward. – R.M.D.
This means everything to me.
There is so much power in sharing your story, reaching out for help and finding others to join you in your healing process. Listen to your gut. I promise, the time will go by much faster when you have a solid support system cheering you on.
Imagine if we all ask ourselves: "What can I do today to be kind and spread more love?"
To Hope & Healing,
My Dad is battling cancer. It's probably the worst and last thing anyone ever wants to hear when they pick up the phone. As I'm sure you can imagine, it is absolutely tearing me up inside. He starts chemo this week and will be undergoing therapy for the next few months. I am scared, sad, anxious and praying- constantly. Even thru my work, I am unable to change anything about his journey at this time. So, I have chosen to accept what is, support him unconditionally and tell him how much I love him- every single day. I believe he will beat this and that all will be okay, but it's going to be a long road...
So, while in a session this week, one of my clients caught me off guard. We were just about wrapping up and she goes, "I have a random question...who helps you with your problems? I know that majority of your days are spent helping so many people with all different issues, this is like therapy- right? But I'm sure you deal with a lot too. So who is there for you when you need it?"
I literally laughed, but the thought stopped me in my tracks. The truth is, I haven't been very open about what is going on because I am so immersed in what I do. It's been my saving grace. I absolutely love my purpose and wouldn't change it for the world. Believe it or not, those that I am working with end up helping me just as much, if not more. I guess I didn't realize it fully until that moment. It's kind of an incredible exchange of love if you think about it.
But. Just as we all do, I deal with my own personal and life struggles- as I am now in this very moment. There will be dark, cold times but those that grab your hand and guide you to the littlest bit of warmth matter the most. I am lucky enough to say I have plenty of people who do that for me.
With that being said, I am grateful to have you in my life- from my family, to friends, clients and everything in between; you are my light.
This week is dedicated to all of you, especially my Dad.
In Community & Strength,
So, we are 19 days into the New Year. Good time to take a pit stop:
The majority of our daily health & wellness battle is confronting the things in your life that are contributing to our failure, coming up with strategies to persevere and always, always, always adapting to change- because it's inevitable. It's also moving out of our own way.
As Dr. Phil says, "You can't change what you don't acknowledge." I love that guy. Plus, it really is true. It's time to get serious about your life and all of the people that you've chose to be in it, including yourself. What's not working? Why are you staying stuck? Where is your support coming from? There really is a very fine line between have "real" issues and just making excuses. Which side of the spectrum are you on? Can you honestly say you are not clearly blocking yourself from moving forward?
I have a lot of questions, I know. But as a wellness advocate and mentor, I see these kinds of hurdles every day. In fact, as successful as my month has been with those who are open and eager to change- I've also dealt with a lot of the opposite issues too. People who have the best intentions in the world, but may not be open to change, not ready, or just holding on to their comfort zone out of fear. They're stuck. If you want to be successful, you need to really ask yourself what is truly going on. Underneath all the bullshhh* that you made up that stops you from living the life you deserve.
If this is the case, you need to find additional support to clear blockages and give you a structure that is proven to work. I know I can help you, but you have to want to be helped- it's as simple and as complicated as that. If for some reason it's not me that unsticks you from being stuck; find someone, something, anything that you can trust to dig you out of that sandy hole and come back to the beach where the sun is shining and life is oh-so-beautiful. It really is pretty up here.
No matter what- it's never too late to put yourself first. So step aside, put away your excuses and let's get real. That's the only sure way to be successful.
In Light & Self-Love,
P.S. Out of the goodness of my 2015 heart, I am still offering complimentary consultations: but it won't be forever. Please contact me ASAP to schedule!
THINK before you SPEAK
(Is it True, Honest, Inspiring, Necessary, Kind?)
May 2015 brings less cruelty and violence in this world and more peace and love.
Here's to all of us understanding.
Happy New Year,
Some may call me crazy but just yesterday I have started my seasonal, whole-food, gentle metabolic cleanse. It's 7 days long and yes you've done the math correctly; that puts me thru Christmas. You can pick your jaw up from the ground now....it's going to be okay!
You know what? I'm not even slightly shifted because I have declared this Christmas about everything but food and drinks. I also celebrated Thanksgiving pretty solidly and will be traveling for New Year's, so I'm not feeling deprived at all. However, this year has been extremely challenging and also incredible for me at the same time. Weird but I'm sure you can relate. I have been through enough to realize what's important and what is worth my time and energy. Guess what? Gorging myself in cookies, alcohol, and my Mom's twice baked potatoes is just not on my naughty list this year. I am tapping out.
Now I don't want you to think that I am not going to enjoy the time I spend with my family, because I am. I have just decided to challenge myself this week to TRULY make it more about all of the other "stuff" rather than focusing on what is placed on the dinner table. My year has been so focused on health, happiness, balance and purposely shifting my life to help others find the same. It has been more rewarding than I can possibly express and I am extremely excited to see what next year brings. With that being said, I will sail through the next 7 feeling whole, grounded and focused on absorbing all of the love and light that I feel from others. I'm not asking you to do the exact same, but whatever it takes to "bring you back" I would encourage you to find that peace. Choose to do whatever you want to celebrate, and encourage those around you to do the same. It might also set a good example for all the kids in the room who are wrestling over iPads and Xboxes.
Also, note that in approximately 365 more days Christmas will come back around again, and there will be tons of candies, pies, and cream cheesed mashed potatoes for you to dive into. Don't worry. I promise it'll all make a strong reappearance. It might be a long shot too- but I'm sure Aunt Molly can email you her recipes to be made at any time throughout the year. So there really is no "I'm never having this again" mentality. It's at your beckon call whenever you wish. See what I did there?
So, to wrap this thing up I will remind you that these next few weeks are crazy. People are traveling, celebrating and just trying to take the time to wind down. Find a few minutes to plan what you would like 2015 to bring for you:
No matter what you decide to do now and through the New Year remember this:
"Christmas is forever, not for just one day
for loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away
like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf
The good you do for others is the good you do yourself..."
Wishing you the best year ever!
As the countdown rolls on, I'm sure you are feeling the pressure of the holidays. There are lots of parties to attend, presents to shop for, baked goods to avoid. But take a deep breath, you are not alone.
In a perfect world, I could say that you would still be able to make long lasting, sustainable changes this time of year. The reality is, there are clients I am working with that are and do. But, I'm not saying it's for everyone. Most of the time, people are tying a knot and hanging on for dear life until the new year rolls on. If that's you, it's okay. I'm not here to judge or bully you through the holidays, that's just not my style. But, I am going to share with you some easy swaps you can make between now and then that will make a big difference. Here are ways you can set yourself up for success, rather than failure this holiday season:
But, as you can see, with small, easy changes you will make a BIG difference in your self and your health. Plus, once you get used to some of those swaps listed above, you will never go back! I prefer the latter on the ones I mentioned now that I've changed my palate. It works, it just takes time.
Whatever you decide to swap from a nutrition perspective, do not compromise on what this season is truly supposed to be about: sharing love, compassion, joy and good thoughts for the next year to come. I think now more than ever we need more people coming together, as opposed to the opposite.
I hope that this holiday season is merry & bright for you and your entire family. I wish you all health, happiness, and prosperity as we enter into 2015.
Remember to hold your loved ones tight, as life is very short and can change in an instant.
In Peace & Joy,
As the days turn into weeks and months, it can be easy to get caught up in the every day grind. We sometimes forget important things in our lives that make us who we are or find ourselves taking for granted those people who stay by our sides. I know that I do, which is the direct reason for this post.
On this day of Thanksgiving, I would like to personally take time to show gratitude for the special people in my life. This has been one of the greatest years that I've had, without a doubt. I opened the doors of Shore Nutrition & Wellness and I've never looked back. I am doing what I love, growing, learning, helping as many people as I possibly can and truly enjoying every single day. What could be better?
I would have never been able to accomplish any of this without the following people:
What are your greatest blessings? When was the last time you let them know?
In Giving & Thanks,
